Tell the London Mayoral candidates to support a manifesto for Generation Rent

Generation Rent has a London Mayoral Manifesto, calling for a range of radical policies that will fundamentally change the London housing market and put support for private renters at its centre. The manifesto calls for fundamental reform of planning, rent control, extended security of tenure and greater regulation of the private rented sector.

Please write to the London Mayoral candidates today, asking them to support our manifesto and, if elected, use their position to argue for greater housing powers for the mayor, to ensure London has a housing market that is affordable, decent and secure for all its residents.

Generation Rent, the campaign for private tenants, has launched a housing manifesto for London and I am writing to you today to ask you to support this policy programme as part of your mayoral candidacy. Housing in London is not working for the city's 2 million private renters and we need an increase in building to support the city's current and future needs. But supply is only part of the picture and the capital needs a Mayor prepared to go much further in ensuring that London's residents have access to affordable, secure and decent homes. Generation Rent is calling for:

<li>Rent control in the private rented sector to ensure affordability for the millions of Londoners who rent</li>
<li>Greater regulation of the private rented sector to ensure agents and landlords treat their tenants properly</li>
<li>Extended security of tenure so that private renters don't live under constant threat of eviction</li>
<li>A Decent Homes Standard for the private rented sector to improve conditions in the sector</li>
<li>Fundamental reform of the planning system to ensure much greater provision of genuinely affordable housing</li>

The next London Mayor can go much further in ensuring that housing supports the residents of the city, rather than being a drain on their finances, health and wellbeing. But whoever is next elected Mayor will need additional powers to truly reform the housing market in the capital. I am therefore asking for your support for this policy programme but also a commitment to demand greater powers from government so that the next Mayor can properly tackle the London housing crisis.
