End unfair evictions

As a private renter you never really know where you will call home in a year's time. Your landlord could raise the rent to more than you can afford, simply not renew your tenancy without giving a reason, or sell it, which is happening en masse in Walthamstow. One in 4 of us can expect to lose our home through no fault of our own. We need better protection.

If we can get all mayoral candidates to pledge to help renters then change is much more likely - whoever is elected. Please ask the mayoral candidates to support Generation Rent's proposal to limit rent increases to inflation and give tenants the right to compensation if their landlord kicks them out through no fault of their own. This will give renters much greater security in their homes, and the knowledge that if they are forced to move someone else will pay for it.

There are 2 million private renters in London and most of them have no idea where they will call home in a year's time, thanks to the landlord's ability to raise the rent to an unaffordable level, or evict them without needing a reason. This is happening to residents in Walthamstow, where <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/feb/05/london-poverty-charity-blamed-for-walthamstow-evictions-after-it-sells-up-to-developers">a private company has bought the estate and is now kicking them out</a>. Will you add your support to Generation Rent's call for limits on rent rises and restrictions on no-fault eviction?  No renter should be left in the lurch just because their landlord wants to sell up. With the threat of losing their home and little prospect of home ownership, it is impossible for renters to settle down.  Most landlords already want long term tenants and keep rents at a reasonable level, but this should be a right for all private renters - <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/one-in-four-private-tenants-have-been-kicked-out-of-their-home-by-a-landlord-for-no-reason-a6836221.html">27% of whom can expect to lose their home at some point while they rent</a>. Being required to compensate tenants evicted on no-fault grounds for three months' rent will deter unscrupulous landlords from carrying out opportunistic evictions and give tenants who do have to move a less stressful experience. This is a practical way to give people who are stuck with private renting greater security in their home, with minimal impact on landlords who already treat their tenants well.  Please let me know your plans to improve security for renters.
