Olympic rent increases

Since December 2013 the Olympic Village has been filling up with tenants and is now nearly full. Some tenants are in social housing, some are in private tenancy or shared ownership. Almost 400 households are in intermediate tenancy at 80% market rents, the landlord being a company called Triathlon Homes.

In recent months things have turned sour for these intermediate renters. Triathlon has started demanding rent rises, some of which are huge. Some tenants have been asked for £200-300 more per month. Triathlon has also bullied people into converting periodic tenancies to fixed terms, including threatening to evict people who refuse.

The Olympic Village is now home to almost 3,000 households, almost 400 of which are rented at 80% of market rates by Triathlon Homes. Recently Triathlon has turned nasty, demanding monthly rent increases of up to £300 and bullying people to sign new contracts on the threat of eviction. They say they're not a Housing Association and therefore refuse to obey HCA guidance on rent rises in sub-market homes but at the same time insist they are a Housing Association to avoid joining Newham's landlord licensing scheme. Please could you do two things to help tenants. 1. Please prosecute Triathlon for failing to licence as a private landlord. 2. Please step in and ask Triathlon to cease bullying tenants, to offer a "roll back" to tenants who have already been bullied into new contracts, and to commit to increases in rent that are capped to increases in average wages. East Village tenants were sold a vision of a new, exciting community but this vision is being destroyed by a greedy, bullying landlord who doesn't share your vision of an Olympic legacy for east London.
